It’sJeffFlavin’sfirstdayonthejobasacubreporterfortheEnquirer.Theboss,Archer,placeshimwithlazyreporterStuWoodrow.StudetestscubsandtreatsJeffbadly.JeffsavesadrunkenStu’sjobbycoveringconvictedracketeerHouseman’sescapefromprison.JeffgoestoHouseman’ssisterforascoopandwitnessesthemurderofHousemanandaninnocentyoungchild.WhilegratefultoJeff,StuthinksJeffistoodecenttobeareporterandsendshimonafakestory,whichresultsinanangryArcherdemotingJeff.Onhisown,JeffgoestothecourthousetoseethetrailofMarques,accusedofHouseman’smurder.Jeff,whospeaksSpanish,hearsthetranslator,Olmeda,falselystatethatMarquesconfessestothekilling.JefftellsArcherthathehasastory.Theproblemisthatbecauseofthefakestory,nobodybelieveshimnow.
